A summary of tasks for the 2009-2010 school year in the MYP

Welcome everyone. I trust you are all settled in by now. Here is a list of issues that we will need to consider this year. Some are of more relevance to grade 10 teachers than others.

1. Moderation
All grade 10 teachers will need to prepare moderation samples once again for submission to me on 19 March 2010. We will be submitting everything electronically so please begin preparing for this now.

2. The new Language A subject guide is to be used from this year.

3. Personal Project supervision
Please ensure that you have made contact with your students this year and have determined what they did during the July break. We must begin adding pressure to them to regularly show their process. All supervisors have access to both their student’s draft written statement as well as timeline on Google Docs. Please check these when meeting with your students.

4. Significant concepts
As we develop our understanding of these and how they impact on our teaching and assessment, I look forward to seeing how these bring a more natural focus on the areas of interaction.

5. New MYP students
Early in September I will be hosting an evening for all parents and students new to the MYP during which I will explain how the MYP differs from other models. I will also be demonstrating how criterion related assessment works.

6. Assessment criteria
Please ensure that all your students know what the assessment criteria are for your subject and that they understand which ones are used for assigned tasks.

7. Moderation feedback from the June 2009 moderation session
These reports will be made available to me on 1 Sept- probably later in the day so last year’s grade 10 teachers will definitely have feedback for sharing with your whole department and this year’s grade 10 teachers by 2 September 2009.
8. MYP meetings
A reminder that almost all of our meetings will be spent in the Senior IT lab with all MYP staff working on developing their respective Unit planners. The purpose of all of us meeting together is to facilitate a collegial atmosphere of MYP planning where ideas of AOIs, significant concepts etc are shared and explained in a relaxed working environment. I look forward to working with all of you on this.
